Write. Rewrite. Rinse. Repeat.
Revising is a key component of writing and arguably just as important as the original draft of any feature story, news release or marketing copy. Legendary literary wizards William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White made this very clear more than a century ago in their indispensable “The Elements of Style,” the bible for writers, editors and grammarians.
Upon closer review after your first try, a second pass can be extremely beneficial. Strunk and White stress that writers can save themselves — and their fellow editors — “much labor and time by using scissors” on what’s on paper, “cutting it to pieces and fitting the pieces together in a better order.”
As anyone who’s written anything as basic as a photo caption or a 10,000-word magazine article, there’s always a better, and perhaps shorter, way to tell a Purdue story or spark a Boilermaker call to action through your words.
