Purdue Baseball and Intel Collaboration
SUMMARY
Purdue Baseball became connected with Intel’s 3DAT technology in Spring 2021. The team expanded its use of the motion capture lab in Fall 2021 via a partnership with Purdue PhD student Breana Cappuccilli and Purdue Baseball Strength and Conditioning Coach Rance Terry. Breana was interning with Intel at the time and saw opportunity for potential collaboration.
Purdue Baseball has primarily been using the Intel Motion Capture lab & software to track acceleration and running speed – primarily as it relates to base runners and outfielders. Intel has used its 3DAT technology with Olympians (primarily track & field) as well as at the NFL Combine. Purdue is the only college baseball program in the country currently utilizing 3DAT technology.

Purdue is the nation’s first college baseball program to use Intel’s powerful 3DAT visualization technology. The Boilermakers are using it to improve their running technique, which has created a significant increase in team speed. And that’s only one of the many ways that 3DAT can help players develop.
Breana Cappuccilli, a December 2021 PhD recipient in mechanical engineering, helped broker the innovative Purdue-Intel partnership, which should help the Boilermakers make a giant leap during the 2022 season.
