All Hail Purdue! Video

We wanted to create an ad that showcased everything we hold most dear as Boilermakers — persistence, drive and innovation. In the process, we created an anthem that inspires and stirs up deep pride for Purdue fans on game day.

Making Good Use of Our PSA Allotment

In 2023, the 30-second PSA we were allotted for Purdue Athletics was especially important due to a new broadcast deal between the Big Ten Network and NBC, ABC and CBS that gave Purdue more prime-time visibility than in past years. We capitalized on this free opportunity — which was especially valuable because of the increasing cost of TV ads — and made the most out of every available second to show off Purdue’s pride and prestige. Multiple versions of the ad were created — including a vertical option — to use in many additional formats: on social media, on the big screen at Purdue games, on TVs across campus and more.

Creating a Flexible and Strategic Ad

From its inception, this ad was designed to be flexible enough to appeal to many different audiences and be used in many different formats. We also filmed in downtown Indianapolis, bringing in the new Purdue University in Indianapolis location as a key element of this ad, as we work to represent this new expansion as part of our portfolio of offerings.

Crafting a Compelling Narrative

Rather than hiring acting talent, we wanted to show real Boilermakers in their natural environments. We filled our “hero” role for the video through student auditions with the Purdue Department of Theatre and Dance. As is the case with all our projects, diversity was important as we crafted the video — choosing our stars from different backgrounds, fields of study and sports meant that the ad would appeal to a wide variety of individuals and have something for everyone to connect to.

Incorporating High-Energy Visuals and Sounds

The ad premiered during Purdue’s first home football game, kicking off the season. We deliberately set an energetic tone in the first 3-5 seconds of the video to command attention above the noise and chaos of a football stadium. Knowing that our primary audience was watching a sporting event and likely scrolling on a device, we used an initial driving drumbeat and captivating visuals that would pry eyes away from phones and back to the primary screen.

Leaving an Impact on Viewers

“All Hail Purdue!” has become an anthem of sorts for Purdue students. When the video is played at the biggest sporting events at Purdue — football, basketball and volleyball — students in the stands now scream, “All hail Purdue!” alongside the voice-over, proving that the video resonates with the energy of an exciting sporting event.
